Krispy Kreme

Eight doughnuts and a sleeve of Oreos, read straight off the labels, run through the estimator at Jenny's own settings. Press play and the lineup fills in as Scott and Jenny get to each one.

These are Jenny's real afternoon numbers — 1:12, sensitivity 85, target 85 — with her blood sugar set to 96 and a flat arrow. The estimator's fat-protein factor was left at 100% on this episode, so every extended figure here is the full Warsaw number, not the tool's usual 50%. 5:31

The Krispy Kreme lineup

Every number is off the label at krispykreme.com. Every dose is Jenny's settings through the estimator.

Original Glazed

10g of that is sugar
22carb3protein10fat
1.96u up front0.85u over 3h2.81u total
The one Scott ran first. Jenny guessed 40 to 50 — she was picturing a cake doughnut.

Original Glazed Cake

40carb3protein15fat
3.46u up front1.22u over 3h4.69u total
Scott read 40 carbs and 15 fat; protein wasn't read aloud. The estimator's 1.2 over three hours fits about 3g, so that's what's here.

Chocolate Iced Custard Filled

17g of that is sugar
37carb16fat
3.21u up front1.20u over 3h4.41u total
Basically a Boston cream. Less than Scott expected once the cake is out of the picture. Protein wasn't read.

Oreo Cookies & Kreme

28g of that is sugar
49carb4protein20fat
4.21u up front1.63u over 3h5.85u total
The loaded one. More than half of it is sugar — seven teaspoons.

Six Oreo cookies

28g of that is sugar
50carb2protein14fat
4.30u up front1.12u over 3h5.41u total
The detour. Three cookies are 25 carbs and 7 fat; Jenny is eating six in her car. Ran through the tool at her settings.

Red Heart

26g of that is sugar
44carb18fat
3.80u up front1.35u over 3h5.15u total
Valentine's. Protein wasn't read.

Teddy Bear

28g of that is sugar
46carb9fat
3.96u up front0.00u no wave3.96u total
Jenny's pick, for cuteness. Protein wasn't read.

Glazed, with icing and sprinkles

37carb15fat
3.21u up front1.13u over 3h4.34u total
The plain glazed is 22. The icing on top is another 15.

Three of these went through the estimator on the recording — they're the highlighted cards, and the numbers on them are the ones Scott read out. The rest are the same settings and the same math, run afterward.

One glazed doughnut. How many carbs?
22g
Jenny said 40 to 50 — she was thinking of a cake doughnut, and that one is 40. The plain glazed is 22, and 10 of those grams are sugar. Half the calories are fat.

The tool wants two units up front and 0.85 stretched over three hours for the fat. Jenny would take two units flat and skip the extended — see how she does it below. Scott's counterpoint: 22 fast-hitting carbs while your algorithm has already pulled basal back is exactly when that 0.85 might matter.

How Jenny actually does it7:08

A glazed doughnut in the afternoon, on her own settings.

  1. Pre-bolus fifteen minutes.Twenty, depending on the time of the month. Fifteen on a normal afternoon.
  2. Two units, all up front.A little heavier than 1:12 calls for on 22 carbs — that's deliberate.
  3. No extended bolus."With only 10 grams of fat, this type of thing doesn't need an extended bolus."
  4. The algorithm has her back.On Trio with dialed-in settings she doesn't cover extra. On a basic pump she wouldn't either — nothing is being taken away.

Same doughnut shop, almost double the carbs. Over four and a half units even for Jenny — "that's also a lot of insulin at one time for me."

Takeaway18:45

A starting place some people use: sugar grams as pre-bolus minutes.

Jenny has watched people who don't know where to start take the total or added sugars off the label and use that number as their first pre-bolus time. She was careful on the recording: "this is not medical recommendation." It's a pattern she's seen work as a starting point, then you look at the CGM and tweak for next time.

7 tsp
of added sugar in one Oreo Cookies & Kreme doughnut

49 carbs, 28 of them sugar. More than half of this doughnut is sugar, and the tool has no way to know how hard that first half hits.

"Like a five and a half unit bolus" at Jenny's settings, with a ten-minute pre-bolus. Jenny's own plan for six Oreos: go for a run after.

Put icing on a glazed doughnut. How many carbs does it add?
+15g
22 becomes 37 — the icing alone is most of a plain glazed doughnut. Jenny: "a lot of people unconsciously undercount for things like frosting."
